2022 Wimbledon
The oldest tennis tournament in the world is upon us. We are of course talking about The Championships, more commonly also known as Wimbledon.
The 135th edition takes place from 27 June 2022 until 10 July 2022 and as always we are sure that 2022 Wimbledon will be highly entertaining. Who will be the winner of this prestigious slam?
Wimbledon 2022 Overview
Last year’s winner, Novak Djokovic has his sights firmly set on adding to his six titles. With his last Grand Slam win coming at Wimbledon last year, the Serbian’s hunger for success is at an all-time high. Standing in his way the resurgent Rafael Nadal tops the list of likely contenders. The ladies draw seems to be a more open affair with last year’s winner, Ash Barty having retired after winning the 2022 Australian Open.
Serena Williams returns to the tournament after an injury-plagued 2021. The seven-time champion can never be written off. Fresh from her success at the recent French Open, Iga Swiatek is arguably the favourite. While lacking results on grass, the winning momentum displayed by the world number one is something to admire. As always, there are other big names that are capable of taking home the title. One thing for certain is that we are in for an exciting two weeks.
2022 Tennis form
With both the Australian Open and the French Open wrapped up for 2022, the grass court specialists have patiently lied in wait for Wimbledon to begin. Leading up to the event, there are only a few grass court tournaments in which to gauge form on the fast surface. The two main grass court tournaments that precede Wimbledon for men are The Queens Club and Halle competitions, respectively. The reigning Queens Club champion and 2021 Wimbledon runner up, Matteo Berrettini successfully defended his title this year. In Halle, Hubert Hurkacz (2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist) won against favourite Daniil Medvedev. Both Berrettini and Hurkacz proceed to Wimbledon 2022 with good momentum. Rafael Nadal has had a stellar season so far, winning the first two slams of the year. While potentially short in terms of game time on grass, he is on a hot streak of note.
For the ladies, the player enjoying the form of her life is Swiatek. Winning six titles, one of which includes the 2022 French Open, the 21-year-old from Poland is the player to beat. Winning the junior event at Wimbledon in 2018, Swiatek no doubt would love to add the senior title to her name. Another player coming into the tournament with some positive momentum is Petra Kvitova. Winning the Eastbourne International event sets the two-time Wimbledon champ up nicely heading into the third slam of the year.
Past and present success & Gran Slam
One cannot think of Wimbledon without Roger Federer coming to mind. With eight titles, he is the most successful male player in the history of the event. Plagued by injuries and probably past his best, it is still unfortunate that the ‘Fed Express’ is not competing in his favourite slam this year. Having won six times since 2011, Novak Djokovic is clearly the most successful player of the recent past. Only Federer and Andy Murray have managed to win a title in this purple patch of Djokovic’s. Rafa last won the event in 2010, but with the form he is in, there is no reason he cannot add to his tally of two.
On the ladies’ side of things, Serena Williams has been the most successful player in recent times. The last of her seven titles came in 2016, so one could argue that she is not the player of old. It would be foolish to write her off though. The only other repeat winner since 2011 is Petra Kvitova. However, the fact that she last won a grand slam in 2014 will count against her. With 2021 winner Barty retired, it could be the start of a new age of women’s tennis at Wimbledon 2022.
Men’s contenders
Although there are many hopefuls to take home the title, the truth is that there are probably only two realistic contenders at this year’s 2022 Wimbledon event. With respect to the rest of the men’s draw, if any player other than Nadal or Djokovic win it will come as a surprise. The form player in 2022 versus the player with the most weeks spent as world number one in history. It does not get better than this.
Carlos Alcaraz, who enjoyed remarkable success on clay this year is still a newbie to the grass court game. He undoubtably has the talent to go far, however one feels that he still has much to prove on this surface.
2021 runner up Berrettini is a realistic contender to win Wimbledon 2022. It could be argued that he has not yet developed enough as a player to deliver the consistent results required to win a slam. His time will come, but this year may be a stretch.
Another of last years semi-finalists, Hurkacz could also very well make it to the semi-final stage again. Again, one must question whether he has reached the maturity required to go all the way.
Others worth paying attention to include the ever-controversial talent that is Nick Kyrgios, double Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, the in-form Marin Cilic, and perennial contender Stefanos Tsitsipas. While none of these four players are likely to win outright, they could be good for an exciting match or two during the two-week tournament.
Notable in their absence are the current world number one, Daniil Medvedev and 2020 Olympic Champion Alexander Zverev. Restricted by both county allegiance and injury, it is a pity that neither of these two are in the mix in Wimbledon 2022.
Ladies field
As with the French Open, the women’s tournament is a case of who can beat Iga Swiatek? She has been unrivalled this year. If form alone counts for anything she is the sure favourite. Ons Jabeur is one of the larger threats to Swiatek. While she disappointingly exited Roland Garros in the first round, she won the Berlin Open in her build up to Wimbledon 2022.
Emma Raducanu, the current US Open champion could pose a serious threat. If she is be able to manage her injury concerns.
Kvitova and Williams are the other two who could spring a surprise or two. However, one does feel that they may not have the stamina or form to make it through seven matches.
2022 Wimbledon – Final Words
Strawberries and cream are synonymous with Wimbledon. Exciting tennis is also a given. While there are clear favourites in both the men’s and women’s draw, there is always a major upset just waiting to happen. Even without some prominent names, this year’s event will surely deliver the excitement that Wimbledon is known for. So all eyes are on the courts in London during this years 2022 Wimbledon schedule.
