The most prestigious horse racing event in South Africa is upon us. On 28 January 2023 the best horses and jockeys from all over the world will compete at the 2023 Cape Town Met at the Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town.
The Cape Town Met is known for its fast-paced action and high stakes, making it a thrilling event for both horse racing enthusiasts and casual spectators alike. The event features a variety of races, including the main event, the Met Handicap, which is a Grade 1 race run over 2000m. WSB Cape Town Met Final Field
The final field of this year’s Cape Town Met has just been announced. The question is therefore which horse will cross the line first. Last year’s champion Kommetdieding and 18 other horses line up at the 161st renewal.
Kommetdieding will again be ridden by Gavin Lorena and comes out of Gate 6. Last year’s second Jet Dark and third placed Linebacker come out of gates 4 and 16. Bookies favourites are currently Jet Dark as well as Make It Snappy but this year’s L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner Al Muthana shouldn’t be underestimated.

The WSB Cape Met 2023 has an overall purse of R5 million but the main race alone has a R2 million purse. The race winner takes home R1 187 500 while the runners-up receive the following prize money:
- 2nd place: R380 000
- 3rd place: R190 000
- 4th place: R95 000
- 5th place: R47 500
All eyes are obviously on the main race with is scheduled as the 9th race of the day at 17:10. But the other 11 races are also definitely worth watching as well as betting on.
