March 2023 Sport Preview
In our February 2023 Sport Preview we saw some big events kick off. New to the sports calendar is the Betway SA20 and then the ever famous Six Nations 2023 and the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. In February LeBron James wrote history when he became the NBA’s all-time record scorer.
Furthermore in our March 2023 Sport Preview we cover all main sport events for this month. From the Women’s Six Nations, the start of the F1 season to the Cape Epic. So let’s have a look in more detail.
Ongoing Sports Events
There aren’t many events that have carried over into March however we have plenty to look forward to.
Guinness Six Nations 2023: February surprised the rugby world with a few unexpected wins and challenges. The 1st one being Scotland that beat England at Twickenham 23-29 for the 1st time since 1972, Van der Merwe was on fire with 2 epic tries. Scotland then bulldozed Wales 35-7 in round 2. Furthermore Italy played incredible against France in their opening match and again against Ireland. The games in March are as follows:
- Italy vs Wales ( Saturday 11 March)
- England vs France ( Saturday 11 March)
- Scotland vs Ireland (Sunday 12 March)
- Scotland vs Italy (Saturday 18 March)
- France vs Wales (Saturday 18 March)
- Ireland vs England (Saturday 18 March)

Formula 1 Start of Season
So the pre-season testing in Bahrain started off with a bang! Sergio Perez brought a strong pre-season for Red Bull by topping the timesheets on the third and final day of testing in Bahrain. Moreover he was just ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. The following races will be taking place in March 2023 to kick off the F1 season:
- Bahrain will be 3-5 March 2023 which will be the 1st F1 race for 2023.
- Saudi Arabia is 17-19 March 2023 and second on the calendar.
- Australia, this race will be in Melbourne. This is one of the fastest tracks on the calendar. Make sure you watch all the action between 31 March 2023-2 April 2023.
So we are excited to see what this year holds in F1 racing if the pre-season testing is anything to go by. However as we all know the track and cars hold many unexpected surprises. HSBC 7’s
Furthermore in March we will be entertained over 2 weekends. One weekend in Vancouver and one weekend in Hong Kong. We all know how exciting the Hong Kong 7’s can be and both these weekends will see the Men’s and Women’s teams participate. So Vancouver will be 3-5 March 2023 and Hong Kong 31 March–2 April 2023. The rest of the 2023 calendar looks like this:
- Singapore: 8-9 April 2023 – Men’s Teams only.
- Toulouse: 12-14 May 2023 – Men & Women Teams.
- London: 20-21 May 2023 – Men’s Teams only.

PGA Tour golf: The Players Championship 2023
The Players will be held 9 March 2023-12 March 2023 this year, the course is a par 72 and measures 7 189 yards. There are 144 players invited based on the winners of the PGA Tour events since the last Players. Moreover, Top Golfers Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm will be among those eyeing glory.
Currie Cup 2023
The ever popular and one of the oldest provincial rugby tournaments in the world, the Currie Cup 2023, starts on 10 March 2023. It will run through until April. So plenty of local rugby to enjoy!
Horse racing: Cheltenham Festival
There are four extraordinary days of racing from Tuesday 14 – Friday 17 March 2023. Featuring 14 races across four days of racing as the best horses, trainers and jockeys go head to head. So with the finest racing comes the finest fashion as well and as we all know many like to dress up for these events. Furthermore the festival is broken into these 4 days. Women’s Six Nations 2023
This will be the 22nd edition of the Women’s Six Nations. It will take place between Saturday March 25 – Saturday April 29. Furthermore as of 2023 it is known as the Tik Tok Women’s Six Nations and will be played in this 6 week window. England were victorious over France in 2022. Who will be the victors of 2023? - Wales vs Ireland – 25 March 2023.
- England vs Scotland – 25 March 2023.
- Italy vs France – 26 March 2023.

Snooker: 2023 Tour Championship
The 2023 Tour Championship is an upcoming professional snooker tournament. It will take place from 27 March – 2 April 2023 at Bonus Arena in Hull. This tournament will host the world’s best snookers players in the world and is sponsored by British car retailer Cazoo for the 1st time.
Cape Epic
The Cape Epic is known as The Untamed African MTB Race. This race is 19-26 March 2023 in the Western Cape in South Africa. The race takes 2 years to plan where in the Western Cape riders will test themselves with a distance of around 700km and 17 250m climbing. So this year the route is 658km, 15775m Climbing and kicks off on the trails of Meerendal Wine Estate. For more details read our Absa Cape Epic 2023 article.
