October 2022 Sport Preview
September 2022 was riddled with surprises in the sports world, makes one wonder what October 2022 will bring. This month sees the start of the men’s ICC World Cup T20 in Australia, the long awaited Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and so much more.
In our September 2022 Sport Preview we covered more than 15 highly anticipated events and we were not disappointed. With the US Open in September 2022 came a lot of excitement, joy and tears. Serena Williams, the legend, has retired. And at just 19 years old Alcaraz has now become the youngest world No. 1 ever on the men’s side. This was his first Grand Slam championship. Let’s have a look at our October 2022 Sport Preview in more detail:
Grand Prix in October 2022
The Singapore Grand Prix will be from 30 September 2022 – 2 October 2022 and will surely hold some surprises on the grid. So Verstappen could secure the F1 title in Singapore, he needs to outscore Leclerc by 22 points, Perez by 13 and Mercedes’ George Russell by six. We are looking forward to the return of Albon which should be fit and healthy for Singapore. And what a thrilling debut race for Nyck De Vries in the Italian Grand Prix!
So there are a total of 4 Grand Prix in October if you count Singapore. Next up will be the Japanese Grand Prix from 7 – 9 October, followed by the US Grand Prix 21 – 23 October. And last but not least is the Mexican Grand Prix 28 – 30 October.

Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints
The Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints face off at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the UK on 2 October 2022. Starting Quarterbacks will be #8 QB K. Cousins for the Vikings and #2 QB J. Winston for New Orleans Saints.
London Marathon
On the 2nd of October 2022 will be the London Marathon. Very popular Greenwich and Blackheath are the starting points and they all merge by the 3 mile marker. So landmarks to keep an eye on are Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf skyscraper, Tower of London, London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Some very special sites to see along the way for sure!
ICC World Cup T20 (Mens)
So Australia is set for the big time and some exciting cricket is to be expected down under. The ICC T20 World Cup starts on 16 October – 13 November where the final will be at the MCG. Also known as the Melbourne Cricket Ground. There are 16 squads participating and defending champions Australia are a firm favourite with India close behind. However if you look at the current T20 rankings released on 14 September 2022 it shows India placed at the top, England in 2nd spot and South Africa occupies the 3rd spot. So anything can happen!

Rugby World Cup (Women’s)
The initial World Cup draw was done in January 2021 and we covered a full article on this – 2021 Rugby World Cup Draw. Due to the pandemic it was re-scheduled for October 2022 and this will be the 9th edition of the Women’s Rugby World Cup. New dates are 8 October 2022 – 12 November 2022 in Auckland and Whangarei, NZ. South Africa will be facing France in the first pool matches on 8 October 2022. On 16 October 2022 South Africa will face Fiji in the second pool matches and on 23 October South Africa are facing England in the 3rd pool matches. The quarter finals, semi finals and finals to follow.
New York Giants vs. Green Bay Packers
On Sunday 9 October, the Green Bay Packers, NFC North champions for the third consecutive year, will face the New York Giants in their first international trip. Giants will be playing in the UK for the 3rd time having won both the inaugural London games at Wembley Stadium in 2007.
Rugby League World Cup
The 2022 Rugby League World Cup will run from 15 October to 10 November 2022 in England. There will be a total of 61 games throughout the tournament. Between Saturday 15th October 2022 & Saturday 19th November 2022, the RLWC2021 will kick off at St James’ Park in Newcastle. Manchester will be hosting both the men’s and women’s double-header final. Therefore this will be at Old Trafford as well as the wheelchair final at Manchester Central.
Rugby union autumn internationals
The Autumn Internationals will kick off on 29 October 2022 with Scotland vs Australia in Murrayfield and Japan vs New Zealand in Tokyo. So 5 weeks of thrilling entertainment for all rugby lovers! The Springboks first game will be facing the Irish in Dublin which will be as thrilling as they come. This is a firm favourite in the October 2022 Sport Preview.
Denver Broncos vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars will be facing the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium on 30 October 2022. Starting quarterbacks will be #3 QB R.Wilson for the Broncos and #16 QB T. Lawrence for the Jaguars. So this game marks the 10th year in London for the Jags. It has been 10 years since the Broncos travelled to the UK. Watch out Wembley!
WTA Finals
The WTA Finals is a Women’s tournament played annually at the end of the season. It is uniquely reserved for players at the top of the WTA rankings. The tournament will start on 31 October – 6 November 2022. So there is a one year agreement in place to play in Fort Worth, Texas. There after we will have to wait and see as the suspension of the tournaments in China remain in place.

So with the end of the year closing in we are seeing a lot of finals and changes in the sport industry. Another highlight in September 2022 was the Laver Cup in London where Team World beat Team Europe for the first time ever. It was a very emotional farewell to another legend of the game, Roger Federer.
