The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup promises to be a thrilling showcase of the best women’s cricket talent from around the world. This year, the tournament kicks off on October 3, 2024, and will be held in the UAE, after being moved from Bangladesh. Therefore the tournament, now in its ninth edition, will see matches played across Dubai and Sharjah.

With 10 participating teams, each competing in four group matches, the top two from each group will also move on to the semifinals on October 17 and 18, culminating in the final on October 20 in Dubai. Competing Nations in the T20 World Cup

Ten teams are set to compete in the 2024 edition and are also divided into two groups. These teams have fought long and hard to be part of this elite group participating in 2024. Furthermore Women’s cricket is evolving rapidly and these are the women at the forefront of it.

So firstly, Australia, the six-time champions, are drawn in Group A alongside 2020 runners-up India and powerhouses New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Group B features South Africa who were runners up last year, England, former champions West Indies, Bangladesh, and debutants Scotland. These teams will battle it out for the coveted trophy.

Greatest Moments in T20 Women’s World Cup History

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has delivered several iconic moments. In 2016, the West Indies’ upset victory over Australia stands out, with Hayley Matthews playing a pivotal role. Meanwhile, Australia’s reign of dominance continued in 2023, when they clinched their sixth title by defeating host nation South Africa in the final. They are also the most successful team to date.

We have had some great players over the years, Lizelle Lee from South Africa was the 2021 player of the year and Chamari Athapaththu from Sri Lanka was player of the year in 2023. West Indies batter Deandra Dottin holds the record for the fastest T20 century in 38 balls in 2010. Therefore we are sure many more memories and moments will be created this year.

The Protea Women will be playing in some warm up matches, they faced New Zealand on the 29th of September 2024 but lost with 8 wickets.

The South African Squad

South Africa’s Proteas come into the tournament as strong contenders, with stars like Laura Wolvaardt as well as Marizanne Kapp leading the charge. South Africa is eager to build on their 2023 success, where they reached their first-ever final. With a mixture of experienced players and fresh talent, the Proteas are well-equipped to challenge the world’s best. The team is as follows:

Laura Wolvaardt (captain), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Mieke de Ridder, Ayanda Hlubi as well as Sinalo Jafta. And Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Suné Luus, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Seshnie Naidu, Tumi Sekhukhune, Chloé Tryon and travelling reserve is Miane Smit.
